It’s simple to read Champions League odds. Take the example of Manchester City to win the competition outright with odds of 5/1. It means that if your bet is successful, you’d get back five times back what you bet. So, if you wagered £10, you’d win £50 and get your original £10 back for a total of £60.
You might also see odds written as decimal odds. While it may look confusing at first, it’s simple to understand. You simply multiply your stake by the decimal odds. For example, decimal odds of 5.00 mean that a £10 bet would return £50.
You might also see betting Exchanges when you bet on the Champions League. When you play on the Exchange, you’ll see the option to Back or Lay an outcome. Back means betting on this outcome to happen, while Lay means betting on it not to happen.

Champions League History & New Format
The Champions League first began life as the European Cup in 1955. In the early days it was only open to sides that won the title in their respective country, and was a straight knockout competition with no seeding. Manchester United was the first English team to lift the coveted trophy in 1968, with the likes of Bobby Charlton and George Best starring in the final. Real Madrid were the team to beat early on, winning the first five European Cups on the bounce. They’re now sitting pretty at the top of the tree with 15 wins in total.
The competition was officially re-branded as the Champions League in 1992, with the addition of the group stage. This ushered in the era of some truly great players, including the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Paolo Maldini, and Ronaldinho. Manchester United scooped the title in 1999 on the way to a historic treble, while Liverpool won one of the most famous finals of them all in Istanbul in 2005. Chelsea took their first ever Champions League crown in 2012. During these years, we also saw one of the most famous football rivalries ever emerge, between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – these two greats took the game to places it had never been before.
We again saw a change to the format in 2024, with the competition expanded from 32 to 36 teams. The old groups were replaced by one league table, with each team drawn against six different opponents. The top eight teams automatically qualify for the Round of 16, while teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off. It means we get some epic encounters between the big boys early on and see some of the smaller sides punching above their weight.
