Win bet: You bet on which dog will finish first.

Place bet: You bet on a dog to finish first or second.

Each way bet: You place two bets. One to win and one to place. If your dog wins the race, both your bets come in. If they finish in the top places, only your bet to place wins.

Show bet: You bet on a dog to first, second, or third.

Quinella bet: You bet on two dogs to finish first and second, but in any order.

Exacta bet: You bet on two dogs to finish first and second, and in an exact order.

Superfecta bet: You bet on four dogs to finish first, second, third, and fourth, and in an exact order.

Top Greyhound Racing Competitions & Events

You can bet on all the top greyhound competitions and events with BoyleSports. We have Greyhound Derby betting odds for both the Irish and English Derby, as well as all the premier races in the UK and Ireland.

For races in England, you can bet on:

English Greyhound Derby: Founded in 1927, and one of the most famous greyhound races in the world, the English Greyhound Derby is held at the Towcester Greyhound Stadium in Northamptonshire, usually in May or June. Over 180 dogs compete in multiple races, with the winner of the final taking home a £175,000 prize.

Puppy Derby: Run every year at Towcester Greyhound Stadium, the Puppy Derby was first held in 1929. Today, the dogs run over 500m on sand. The price purse is £10,000.

All England Cup: Held at Newcastle Stadium, the All England Cup is run over a distance of 480m on sand, and carries a prize purse of £20,000.

Popular Irish greyhound races include:

Irish Greyhound Derby: The Irish counterpart to the English Greyhound Derby was founded only a year later, in 1928. Held at Shelbourne Park in Dublin towards the end of summer each year, rounds of races take place over successive weekends. The winner of the final is awarded €125,000 from a prize purse of €300,000.

St Leger: One of Ireland’s most prestigious greyhound races, the St Leger is held annually at Limerick Greyhound Stadium. It’s run over 550 yards and has been going since 1944, with a prize purse of €30,000.

The Laurels: The Laurels is the biggest greyhound racing event in Cork. It’s held annually at Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium and is run over 550 yards, with a prize purse of €30,000.

The Oaks: Held annually at Sherborne Park, the Oaks has officially been going since 1932. It’s run over 525 yards on sand, and has a prize purse of €25,000.

Top international events include:

The Melbourne Cup: Held in Australia in November.

The Greyhound Race of Champions: A yearly race held in the US, usually in spring, that sees eight of the top-performing greyhounds in America picked to race one another.

The New Zealand Cup: Usually run at the Addington Raceway in Christchurch each summer.

At BoyleSports, we have ante-post betting markets for most of the top greyhound races. This means, you can bet before the betting markets open – and you’ll usually get favourable odds too.

Betting Tips to Pick a Greyhound Winner

When it comes to picking a greyhound winner, it helps to consider:

Recent form: Just like horse racing betting, form is key when betting on the dogs. Analyse past performance in the last five or six races your chosen dog has run in.

Track record: Check whether the dog has a history of performing well at this specific track.

Race grade: If a dog steps down into a lower grade, it may have a better chance of winning. Likewise, a dog that’s stepping up a grade may struggle initially.

Trap position: The position your dog starts the race in can impact its performance. For example, greyhounds in the widest trap positions have the advantage of seeing the lure as it passes first. This means that early-paced, wide-running greyhounds generally break faster from outside positions.

Trainer form: How the trainer’s dogs have performed in recent races may have an impact on how your chosen dog performs.

Pedigree: Dogs with good lineage may indicate a good potential chance of winning.

Understanding Greyhound Race Types

You should consider a dog’s suitability for each type of race when betting on the dogs. The different types of greyhound races include:

Sprints: These are ideal for the fastest starters. Sprints are usually run over 300m, covering two bends in the track.

Middle distance: This is the most common greyhound race type, run over distances between 380m and 550m.

Stayers: Ideal for dogs with strong stamina. Stayers are between 600m and 700m, covering six bends.

Marathons: The ultimate test of endurance, these long-distance races start at 800m and cover up to eight bends.

Hurdles: These races are typically 450m-550m and feature hurdles to clear during the race. Famous hurdle races include the Champion Hurdle.
